Social, Ethical, and Human Issue Scavenger Hunt

Section 1
2) Fair use is any coping  of copyrighted material done for a limited and "transformative" purpose, such as to comment on upon, criticize, or parody a copyright work. Teachers may copy a page or a chapter from textbooks to post onto D2L.
3) No, yes, no, no, no
4) Always cite any and everything that isn't your own work.
Section 2
5) The practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.
6) There are sites teachers can use where students have to submit their essays or papers, and it lets the teachers know. I think teachers know also by the whole body of a piece of work.
8) I plan on using the plagerism detectors. I will use it because I believe it's a good lesson for students to learn what and how to cite other's work.
Section 3
10) There are many risks when allowing students to access the internet, especially  if there are no blocked pages. Students could go on their facebook pages or spend time watching videos on Youtube. Young students or really any students could possibly access pornography.
11) Many schools block a lot of sites. Websites such as facebook or any other social media site will be blocked. There are also ways that as an educator, I can keep track of what my students are viewing.
12) I found a filter called Cybersitter. This is what I would use as a teacher. I will also stress the importance of the responsible use of the internet.
Section 4
14) I agree with teacher doing this and I think it's a good idea. Anything can happen with computers and software so I think it's smart for teachers to be prepared.
17) I agree that they should be able to copy  what they can't afford. If it's mandated that students have to be proficient then I believe this is allowed.
18) I don't think that's legal. I feel like students could then make extra copies of the software.
Section 5
19) I agree that this is fair use. The students will have to cite their sources.
21) I agree that it is fair use as long as the student properly cite their websites.
22) I agree this is fair use because it's for a project and it's only clips. If the technology coordinator used the whole song and he didn't pay for it then it wouldn't be fair use. The coordinator still has to cite the clips he used.
Section 6
25) I don't agree that this is fair use. You can't record a whole show and use the whole thing for a project.
26) I don't think it's fair use unless they can cite somehow where they got the original video from.
27) This is permissible because they actually bought the videos.
Section 7)
29) This is not fair use. I don't think you can just copy anything you want.
30) Yes this is permissible. I think they have to get permission from the local businesses to post online.
31) This is fair use because the student is just using it for a project.
Section 8
34)I would talk to the principle first and let her know what happened. Then I would also talk to the technology facilitator to find out if I could be liable. I don't think I would be liable because I'm not the one who copied it. I also would get back all the copies from the other teachers.
Section 9
36) The Children's Internet Protection Act requires that K-12 schools and libraries in the United States use internet filters and implement other measures to protect children from harmful online content as a condition for federal funding.
37) The Digital Millenium Copyright Act is a 1998 US law intended to update copyright law for electronic commerce and electronic content providers. It criminalizes the circumvention of electronic and digital copyright protection systems.
38) The Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization Act of 2002, known as the TEACH Act, is an act of the United States Congress. The importance of the TEACH Act stems from the previous copyright laws that allow educators to copy documents or use copyright materials in a face-to-face classroom setting.

Show Me Video

I created a video for maybe 1st or 2nd graders. In this video I will demonstrate how to sound out a couple of words that have the silent e on the end. I think this video would very helpful in teaching students how to spell some new words. I might show this video right before writing time in class. Here is the link to my video

Teacher's Pages

The first website I went to is a first grade teacher from Carver Elementary School. Her website included a self-introduction. Her page was very colorful and had a link to assignments (even though there wasn’t any there, a newsletter that you had to subscribe to, useful resources (again nothing there), and a class calendar. She also had her contact information. I’m not really sure if she’s trying to communicate anything because I didn’t subscribe to the newsletter. I don’t think she changes her information that often. I thought it was neat that she had the assignments link but was disappointed when there wasn’t anything there.

The next teacher’s page that I went to is a teacher at Edison High School. His page was pretty basic, mostly just an introduction and information about what his job is. He had a link to something about the Theory of Knowledge. I think it’s a course he teaches. He did also have a picture of himself which the first teacher’s page didn’t have. I don’t think he’s trying to communicate anything because there wasn’t additional links to anything.

The last teacher’s page I went to was a math teacher from Capitol Hill Magnet School. Her page included an introduction with a picture and also contact information. The good thing about her website was she included so many links and resources for math. She had a link for MCA practice, online book access, math resources/help websites, and fun math websites. I think she was definitely trying to communicate that she took her job seriously and cared about her students doing well in math.

Educational Mini Lesson

The video I found was a video on fractions for 3rd graders. I struggle with math and this video introduced a creative way to introduce fractions to third graders. The video gave me some ideas as to how to explain ways for my future 3rd graders to learn how to do fractions. I like how the teacher made math into something like a creative project. For those kids who might struggle in math it takes the focus off of thinking of it as math.

Pro/Con Article

The article I found was an article giving multiple reasons how technology in the classrooms is affecting children, especially younger children. They authors state how children already have their heads in video games way too much. They also mention how digital technology reduces attention span and makes it harder for children to complete difficult tasks. A couple of the cons that they list are; handheld devices are associate with several health problems, people who read print text comprehend and remember more, and print textbooks cannot crash, freeze or get hacked into. I liked the article because it also mentioned the pros to adding technology in classrooms. I can understand both sides of the argument.

Inappropriate Social Media Use

Social media link

This was a story I found about a situation that happened in a high school in New Hampshire. Several high school boys were caught posting nude pictures of females on a website. I guess they were even trying to sell some of the pictures. The thing that I learned from this story is that somewhere along the lines we forgot to teach students that certain things should be kept private. But with the increasing demand of technology in schools students are being taught what websites they are allowed to use but not being taught what not to put on the internet. Females along with males are really keeping anything private anymore, every part of their lives is put up for the world to see. Different technology is great for a means to communicate across the world but certain things should be left behind closed doors.

Great Education Blog Site

Hey Everyone,

the educational blog I found was Reality 101. It's a blog page for special education teachers. I like it because it breaks all the topics that might come up when teaching special education, into separate categories. These categories include everything from Assessment, Classroom Management, Diversity, Individual Education Programs, Managing Behavior, to even Reducing Stress. I think so many things come up when teaching a child with special needs and it's good to know you're not the only one experiencing these things. I like this site because sometimes you just need someone you can relate to and blogging is easy to do from across the world.
